Mouse proofing and entry-point sealing in Lubbock, TX.

A house mouse can compress through any gap larger than 1/4 inch — and Lubbock's brick-veneer housing stock has hundreds of them. Mouse proofing seals every gap at the foundation, wall, and door threshold level with materials that hold through West Texas temperature cycling.

Mouse proofing is the 1/4-inch-grade exclusion process that closes every exterior gap a house mouse can use to access a building — weep holes in brick veneer, utility pipe penetrations, door threshold gaps, foundation cracks, and window-casing voids. In Lubbock, TX, mouse proofing is the permanent solution to the annual November-through-March infestation cycle that repeats because the entry points are never addressed.

Where mice get into Lubbock homes.

The most consistent entry point for house mice in Lubbock is the weep hole. Brick-veneer construction — the dominant exterior finish in Lubbock's established residential neighborhoods — has weep holes spaced every 24–32 inches at the base of the brick. They are exactly 3/4 inch wide and open directly into the wall cavity. Most homeowners have never noticed them. Most pest programs do not seal them. We seal them on every mouse-proofing job with copper mesh — the correct material for this location.

Beyond weep holes, the common secondary entry points are: gaps around water supply and drain pipes where they penetrate the foundation; gaps at the bottom of the garage door where the seal has worn; gaps in the exterior door threshold; and gaps around HVAC line sets and electrical conduit where they enter the exterior wall.

What mouse proofing includes.

  • Weep-hole sealing — copper mesh installed at every weep hole on the property perimeter. Expands and contracts with the masonry, does not rust, cannot be chewed.
  • Utility penetration sealing — pipe and conduit entry points sealed with foam-and-mesh appropriate to the gap size.
  • Door sweep inspection and replacement — garage door bottom seals, exterior door sweeps, and threshold gap assessment.
  • Foundation crack sealing — hairline foundation cracks filled with concrete patch and copper mesh insert where mouse-grade gaps exist.
  • Window and door casing voids — gaps at the exterior casing sealed with foam and painted caulk where cosmetically appropriate.
  • Documentation — photo record of every sealed location provided at completion.

Frequently asked questions.

What are weep holes and why do they matter for mice?
Weep holes are the small open gaps in the mortar line at the base of brick-veneer construction, placed there to let moisture drain from the wall cavity. They are 3/4 inch wide and open directly into the wall cavity — the most common mouse entry point in Lubbock brick-veneer homes. Copper mesh installed in the weep hole lets moisture drain while blocking mouse entry.
Why copper mesh and not steel wool or foam?
Steel wool rusts and compresses over time — within one or two seasons at Lubbock's temperature range it is no longer an effective seal. Foam alone can be chewed through by mice. Copper mesh does not rust, does not compress, and cannot be chewed through. It also expands and contracts with the masonry rather than cracking away from it.
How many weep holes does a typical Lubbock home have?
A standard single-story brick home typically has 40–80 weep holes around the perimeter, spaced every 24–32 inches at the base of the brick. Two-story homes have weep holes at both floor levels. We address every one — partial weep-hole sealing is not effective.
Does mouse proofing also stop rats?
Partially. Mouse-grade sealing at 1/4 inch addresses gaps that rats can also use, but rats can enter through larger gaps that mouse proofing does not address. For full exclusion against both species, rat-grade sealing at the roof line and larger foundation penetrations should be combined with mouse proofing.
Can you mouse-proof a home that currently has an active infestation?
If there is an active infestation, we recommend treating simultaneously or treating first — sealing entry points with mice still inside the wall voids can trap them and create a carcass odor problem. We assess the right sequence at the initial inspection.
How long does mouse proofing take?
A standard single-family home with weep-hole sealing plus utility penetrations typically takes 2–3 hours. Larger homes or properties with more gaps may run 4 or more hours. We give a time estimate after the initial audit.
Is mouse proofing a one-time job?
The copper mesh and hardware cloth components are permanent and do not need to be redone. Door seals and sweeps have a shorter lifespan — 3–7 years depending on use — and should be checked periodically.
